Ford unveils ‘no profile’ light bar for Police Interceptor vehicles

Law-breakers in the US will have an even harder time spotting Ford’s 2017 Police Interceptor, thanks to the addition of a super-low-profile light bar - meaning its Explorer-based patroller can stalk wrongdoers almost completely incognito.

The new light bar is mounted on the interior of the car inside the visor, leading to Ford describing it as having ‘no profile’. Those pillar-mounted lamps may still give it away, though...

The new light bar will replace the bulky and obvious roof-mounted system that traditionally gave away the Police vehicles to suspecting drivers. Speed-demons in the US are now left with the near-impossible task of spotting the Interceptors before it’s too late.

According to Ford, aftermarket visor units have been used by a number of agencies for some time, but these units can impede the vision of some officers.

Now that the new system is completely integrated into the visor, it means better visibility for drivers, and, combined with the discreet lights mounted in the grille and front bumper, the Explorers have become ultra-stealthy.

As well as offering a number of different lighting configurations, the light bar can also be programmed to double as a bright-white driving light and can also provide auto-dimming capabilities

Thanks (or perhaps no thanks) to the light bar’s new super-low profile, the only giveaway that an Interceptor is close by might be if its flashing lights are already filling your rear-view mirror.
