2010 Alfa Romeo 169 rendered

Alfa Romeo is preparing to replace its aging 166 with the new 169, seen here for the first time in these artists impressions.

The 169 will mark a complete departure from Alfa Romeo's current styling direction and will set the tone for future large Alfa's.

Likely to draw its inspiration from the Visconti concept first shown at the Geneva motor show in 2004, the 169 will follow the emerging trend of four-door coupes, competing with the likes of the BMW GT and Audi Sportback.

It will be available with a range of powerful petrol and diesel powerplants ranging from 185 to 335kW.

Among these is likely to be a V8 powerplant borrowed from Maserati with the 169 also expected to debut Alfa's new Multiair V6 engine.

The Alfa 169's resemblance to the current crop of Jaguar's is no mere coincidence, with reports suggeting it may be underpinned by the superb Jaguar XF platform.
