Mazda 3 diesel axed

The diesel-powered Mazda 3 hatchback has been axed ahead of a mid-life update to the Japanese brand’s best-selling model.

The Mazda 3 XD Astina model only went on sale in August 2014, but slow sales have lead the brand to reconsider the need for the diesel hatch in its range. The model has been removed from the company's website ahead of a facelifted version arriving in the coming months.

According to figures obtained by CarAdvice, the 2.2-litre turbo diesel XD Astina has managed to lure less than one per cent of all Mazda 3 buyers.

Karla Leach, Mazda Australia senior manager of public relations told CarAdvice that the diesel model has felt the effect of the questions surrounding the fuel, but admitted that the company was always sceptical of how it would fare.

“When we launched it there were questions about diesel, but because of the low uptake we have decided to delete it from the range,” Leach said.

It probably didn’t help that the Mazda 3 XD Astina was the most expensive model in the small car range, at $39,290 plus on-road costs.

It remains to be seen what the upgraded model will bring, but expect new technology and a fresh look, along with revisions to the steering and suspension.
