2017 Mazda CX-4 teasers leaked ahead of Beijing debut

The upcoming Mazda CX-4 SUV has been teased again before its official debut at the 2016 Beijing motor show, after more images of the new SUV were leaked on Mazda’s Chinese media website today.

Pitched as a more coupe-like companion to the popular CX-5 SUV, in much the same vein as BMW's X3/X4 and X5/X6 pairs, the CX-4 is described by Mazda as an “exploring coupe”.

While previous reports suggested the car would make its debut at this year’s Shanghai motor show, it seems that the CX-4 will be shown at this month’s Beijing motor show instead.

These new images again suggest the CX-4 will stay true to the Koeru concept that inspired its look, maintaining much of the show car's front styling and sloping rear roofline.

Mazda’s Kodo design language is clearly evident in the car’s styling, with the five-point grille, swept-back headlights and aggressive LED daytime lights giving the CX-4 the powerful look and stance that is echoed through Mazda’s current model range.

Large alloy wheels fill the flared wheel-arches, continuing Mazda’s push for sporty- and upmarket-looking vehicles at an accessible price tag.

Inside, the familiar MZD-Connect infotainment system sits atop the centre stack with the steering wheel and instrument cluster looking very similar to those found in the 3 small car and CX-5 SUV.

Cargo volume should still be decent despite the coupe-like roofline, with one of the teaser images showing two large suitcases tucked into the boot with room to spare.

The Mazda SUV depicted in the teaser images is clearly identical to the production-ready vehicles that were spied earlier this year in China, well before the car was set to make its global debut.

Australia

The CX-4 is not expected to make its way to Australia, with the company’s local arm having already confirmed a China-only schedule for the foreseeable future.

Speaking with CarAdvice in March, Mazda Australia communications manager Karla Leach said: “at the moment it isn’t going to be sold outside of China”.

Powertrains for the CX-4 are likely to mirror those in the CX-5, which offers the choice of 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, with front- and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The Beijing motor show begins on April 29, so stay tuned for our coverage on the event.
