Ford Mustang:: Australian supply improves with 2000 extra units, Sync 3 infotainment standard

Ford Australia has secured an extra 2000 Mustangs to satisfy massive local demand. Additionally, this range of MY17 Ford Mustangs due late this year will be the first to come with Ford’s new Sync 3 infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The extra stock of new MY17 Mustangs will arrive here near the end of 2016, and help rein in a shortfall that had seen the waiting list stretch into the second half of 2017. With an order book beyond 6000 units (25 per cent higher than predicted), it will help greatly.

Ford Mustang sales began at the start of this year, but such was the demand, the entire 2016 allocation was sold out before anyone actually drove it here. It’s been the nation’s top-selling sports car this year.

The adoption of the more modern Sync 3 system will be a nice bonus to people whose orders stretch far enough into the future to constitute MY17 models (which begin production mid-year). They’ll be the ones getting the new system. Sync 3 is not a simple software update, meaning the current car with Sync 2 will stay thus-fitted.

By the same token, these MY17 Mustangs get new colour options, comprising Lightning Blue, Grabber Blue and White Platinum Tri-Coat. These replace Deep Impact Blue, Competition Orange and Guard.

MY17 EcoBoost Mustangs will also now get a spare wheel, though the 19-inch steel spare wheel and tyre spare pack is unavailable on Mustang GT V8s due to the fitment of Brembo brakes.

Ford Australia is not changing the price of any Mustangs as part of the MY17 updates.

Ford Australia surveys show that the Mustang holds the highest favourable opinion of any Ford model. This is despite the car having rarely been sold here over the previous few decades. Clearly the Pony has some kick, even from afar.

The majority of early sales were the GT V8, but over time, the EcoBoost turbo-four has grown. In February, 40 per cent of Mustang convertibles sold were four-cylinder versions, though the Fastback remains more V8-dominated.

“The 2000 extra Mustangs heading for Australian shores demonstrates the excitement around the vehicle, and it validates Ford Australia’s commitment to invest in expanding our performance vehicle line-up to five models this year,” said Ford Australia president and CEO Graeme Whickman.

The arrival of 2000 extra Mustangs comes hot on the heels of the recent launch of the Falcon Sprint and is all part of Ford Australia’s strategy to “put more Australians behind-the-wheel of five world-class performance vehicles in 2016”, also including the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, and the upcoming Focus RS.

The success of Mustang coincides with a strong start to the year for Ford Australia, with sales up 17.2 per cent on the same time last year. The Ranger 4X4 has 19 per cent of the market compared to the Toyota Hilux 4X4 on 18.5 per cent, while the Ford Kuga is up 51 per cent year-on-year, and Mondeo sales are up 427.9 per cent thanks to decent supply.
