Roborace series reveals robo racer concept

Roborace, the new driverless offshoot of the FIA-approved Formula E racing series, has revealed the first ultra-futuristic concept design for its autonomous track weapon.

The unnamed concept is the work of artist and new Roborace chief design officer, Daniel Simon.

Best known for his work on science-fiction films like Tron: Legacy and Oblivion, Simon’s star has grown further in recent years with the release of his popular art books, Cosmic Motors and The Timeless Racer.

The concept show here may not carry through to the track entirely unadulterated, but with the Roborace series safe from the burdensome requirements of occupant comfort and safety, there is little practical need for the look to change.

“My goal was to create a vehicle that takes full advantage of the unusual opportunities of having no driver without ever compromising on beauty. Racing engineers and aerodynamicists have worked with me from the beginning to strike that balance,” Simon said.

“The Roborace is as much about competition as it is entertainment. Therefore - and quite unusual in today’s racing world - beauty was very high on our agenda and we work hard to merge the best performance with stunning styling.”

Roborace CEO Denis Sverdlov said that Simon’s design merges with the nickname given to the new series by its planners: ‘the global championship of intelligence’.

“So it’s only fitting that the car should be one of the smartest ever to be made,” he said.

The Roborace series was announced in November last year as a support series for the fledging Formula E championship.

Where Formula E is all about human drivers exploring the extreme track potential - and pitfalls - of all-electric motoring, Roborace aims to take that vision a step further by replacing the humans pilots with advanced software and talented control teams.

“We passionately believe that, in the future, all of the world’s vehicles will be assisted by AI and powered by electricity, thus improving the environment and road safety. Roborace is a celebration of revolutionary technology and innovation that humanity has achieved in that area so far,” RoboRace founder Denis Sverdlov said in November.

Roborace is expected to join the Formula E series over the coming year.
