First Jaguar EV due within the next two years – report

British luxury brand Jaguar is reportedly working to have at least one form of electric powertrain on the market by 2018, according to a new report this week.

With its new-generation model onslaught in full swing, including the F-Type, XE, XF, and the soon-to-be-released F-Pace SUV, Jaguar is now reportedly less than two years away from offering its first green car.

US website AutoGuide reports that Jaguar has all but confirmed that an electric vehicle is in the works, after speaking to brand design director Ian Callum at the 2016 New York motor show.

“Within two years, we’ll have something that’s not driven by a petrol engine,” he said, adding that power will instead be provided by “just a couple of hamsters”.

Callum’s comments appear to confirm that Jaguar is working on an alternative to its more conventional combustion engine options.

While it isn’t yet known whether Jaguar’s EV will be based on an existing platform or have its own specific architecture, there is also evidence that Jaguar has filed trademarks for the names I-Type and I-Pace in Europe, as well as the EV-Type name.

Previous reports have suggested that the F-Pace SUV will gain a full-electric variant, which would make it Jaguar’s first EV.

The I-Pace trademark also points to a standalone EV version of the sporty SUV, while I-Type suggests that there could also be an all-electric F-Type in the works, in similar style to the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) showed off some prototype hybrid and EV modules at last year’s CENEX Low Carbon Vehicle event in the UK.

The company had three drivetrain concepts on display: a diesel-electric hybrid, a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid and a full-electric powertrain.

It is possible that Jaguar could utilise technology from these concepts in its upcoming EV, which in turn could be used in future Land Rover products.

Callum also promised an additional surprise later this year, which could come in the form of a new model or concept car, likely to debut at this year’s Paris motor show.
