Honda NSX GT3 New York reveal signals 2017 racing intent

With interest in GT-level motorsport ever increasing, Honda is the latest brand to make clear its racing intentions with the New York motor show unveiling of its Honda NSX GT3 racer.

Clearly stamped with its North American ‘Acura’ branding, the Honda NSX GT3 race car revealed at this week’s 2016 New York International Auto Show is set to tackle the North American GT3 category from 2017.

Said to be undergoing pre-homologation testing, the car features an ‘aluminium-intensive’ space frame, aggressive lightweight bodywork, and aerodynamic add-ons including front-bumper canards, a super-low front lip spoiler, a large bonnet vent, an underbody diffuser, and a not-insignificant rear wing.

With its body and engine produced in two separate Ohio-based factories – as per the production NSX – the NSX GT3 will be powered by a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6.

Rather than employing the road car’s nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, three electric motors and unique Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, the simplified race car will use a six-speed sequential racing gearbox to transfer drive to the rear wheels only.

According to Honda, the brand's Japan-based race engineering arm conducted initial development testing of the car on race tracks in Europe and Japan, with additional development, testing and final FIA GT3 homologation the responsibility of the company's North American race engineering group, Honda Performance Development, in California.

As reported recently, production of the second-generation Honda NSX is now due to begin towards the end of April, following a six-month delay.

Once its competition campaign kicks off, the Honda NSX GT3 will join ranks with the likes of the Audi R8 LMS, BMW M6 GT3Ferrari 488 GT3, Lamborghini Huracan GT3, McLaren 650S GT3, Mercedes-AMG GT3, Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3, and Porsche 911 GT3.
