2017 Range Rover Evoque convertible pricing and specifications

The 2017 Range Rover Evoque convertible is a bold new model from the British marque and could herald the start of a new sub-category in the burgeoning premium SUV market.

Based on the Range Rover Evoque three-door coupe, the drop-top is due to arrive in Australia in the third quarter of the year, between July and September. It will be available in two trim levels with two engine options.

The SE Dynamic is the entry level specification, followed by the HSE Dynamic which has a direct standard Evoque equivalent on offer in Australia. Range Rover offers a huge range of optional features and a number of option packs to customise the Range Rover Evoque convertible.

Both come with either the 177kW/340Nm Si4 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or the 132kW/430Nm TD4 180 'Ingenium' four-cylinder diesel engine. All have a nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, sport mode and four-wheel drive.

The SE Dynamic with the petrol engine costs $84,440 before on-road costs or $84,835 for the diesel, while the HSE Dynamic is $92,015 for the petrol and $92,410 for the diesel.

The diesel engine has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 10.3 seconds and combined fuel consumption of 5.7L/100km, compared to an 8.6-second sprint in the petrol with a fuel consumption claim of 8.6L/100km. Towing capacity is 750kg unbraked or 1500kg braked, for all variants.

All have stop-start as standard, as well as cruise control, electrically assisted power steering, roll stability control, terrain response system, hill descent control, trailer stability assist, rain sensing wipers, xenon and LED headlights and bonnet vents.

4WD with Active Driveline will work to conserve fuel by adopting a 2WD mode during normal driving, and intuitively engaging 4WD and torque vectoring by braking without being prompted. There are, however, buttons on the centre-stack to engage different 4WD modes and hill descent control.

The SE Dynamic comes with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, though you can choose 17-inch wheels at no cost, or option up to 19- or 20-inch wheels. The HSE Dynamic has 19-inch alloys, though you can select 17s or 18s at no charge, or option to 20-inch. There are 13 different size and design combinations, ranging in price from $650 to $3250.

The roof design stays true to the Evoque styling, mimicking the sloping roofline, and can be opened in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. It takes 21-seconds to close the roof, with the same speed limitation. The foldable wind break does make a difference, but it's a $585 option.

The convertible weighs around 280kg more than the coupe, with the bulk coming from reinforced steel doorsills, boron in the A-pillars and bracing under the car to strengthen and add rigidity to the chassis and cabin, and of course the roof itself.

Inside the cabin, the SE Dynamic comes with grained leather seats, while the HSE Dynamic has soft Oxford leather. If you'd like the seats heated, that's an $806 option. All come with electric front seats though the top-spec has greater functionality. Massage seats are also available in the HSE Dynamic at a cost of $3263.

A leather steering wheel is standard, as are aluminium finishes in the cabin, push button start, locking glove box, Meridian sound system, two USB ports and CD player.

The Evoque convertible is the first Land Rover to get the new 10.2-inch high resolution touch screen with the manufacturer's new InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with navigation that made its debut in the Jaguar XF, and the HSE Dynamic also scores a head up display.

Boot space is 251 litres and you can option a ski port for $507. There are ISOFIX points in the rear seats too.

The standard colour is the solid 'Fuji White' and there are 12 other colours available that come with a price premium. Ten of those are metallic and cost around $1800, while the premium metallics including the hero 'Phoenix Orange' and 'Waitomo Grey' pictured are $3640.

Because the convertible is a derivative of the Evoque, it doesn't have to go through its own Euro NCAP testing. The Evoque scored a five-star Euro NCAP rating when it was released back in 2011, yet only has a four-star ANCAP rating.

To increase safety for convertible occupants, there are pop-up roll hoops that will deploy in 90 milliseconds - and the topless Evoque hangs onto its side curtain airbags, too.

Lane departure warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) is included in all variants, as well as front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, while park assist with 360-degree camera is a $2288 stand-alone option on both.

The convertible has the same five-year/100,000km servicing plan as the Evoque at a one-off cost of $1210 for the diesel or $1460 for the petrol and a three-year/100,000km warranty.
