Alpine range could use Mercedes-AMG engines in the future

Future models from French sports car maker Alpine could be powered by engines supplied by Mercedes-AMG.

The revived brand is expected to launch a small coupe, possibly named the A120, by the end of 2016. Based on the Vision concept, The A120, or whatever it will be called, will feature rear-wheel drive and a mid-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Bruno Ancelin, Renault’s vice president in charge of product planning, told AutoExpress that when the brand expands beyond its initial offering and its derivatives, it will need to look for new engines.

Alpine could go for an existing engine within the Renault-Nissan alliance and tune it fit within Alpine's sporty frame of reference.

Alternatively, the sports car firm could opt to purchase engines from outside the alliance. Ancelin singled out Mercedes-Benz as an obvious candidate.

Ancelin told the magazine, "The six-cylinder engine Mercedes is using in its new AMG 43 models might be a good fit for the bigger cars in the Alpine range".

The Franco-Japanese alliance already collaborates on several levels with the German luxury car maker, with the Mercedes-Benz Citan being a renosed and rebadged Renault Kangoo, and the Infiniti Q30 and QX30 based on the same front-wheel drive architecture as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 is used in a wide variety of Mercedes-AMG models from the SLC43 roadster through to the just announced GLC43 SUV. In most applications this engine develops 270kW of power and 520Nm of torque.
