Set to go on sale in the US later this year, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 is claimed to feature “unprecedented levels” of technology, refinement, acceleration and track capability.
Powered by the same supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that drives the Corvette Z06, the ZL1 is “estimated” to produce 640 horsepower (477kW) and 868Nm of torque, channelled through either a six-speed manual transmission or an all-new ten-speed automatic.
The ZL1 variant of the new-generation Camaro is the first Chevrolet to use the new ‘quick-shift’ ten-speed transmission, which has a 7.39 overall ratio for smaller steps between gears.
This enables the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 to remain at optimal revs during acceleration, especially when exiting corners, developed to promise quicker laps and “lightning quick” shift responses. GM aims to introduce the new ten-speed auto to eight vehicle models by the end of 2018.
The ZL1 also features Magnetic Ride suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential.
Adding to the suite of go-fast goodies are a bi-modal exhaust system, Recaro front seats, and a suede trim for the flat-bottom steering wheel and gear-shift knob.
The ZL1 rides on 20-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar rubber (285/30ZR20 front and 305/30ZR20 rear) with a unique compound developed exclusively for this car. Hiding behind the big rims are six-piston Brembo brakes with 390mm two-piece rotors.
Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development for Chevrolet said “it will compare well to any sports coupe, at any price and in any setting”.
If GM decides to bring the big Chev here, it would help to fill the void left behind by its soon-to-be retired rear-wheel-drive Holden Commodore cousin and its numerous V8 SS and HSV variants.
