2016 Skoda Superb pricing and specifications

The 2016 Skoda Superb liftback and wagon range has finally arrived in Australia, as the harbinger of a new era for the fast-growing Czech brand.

The third-generation B8 Skoda Superb is new from the ground up — platform, powertrain, technology — and offers an array of brand-first features. It’s also even bigger inside than the gargantuan previous version, itself quite a feat.

As before, both liftback sedan and ($1700 more expensive) wagon body styles will be offered, this time with the option of three engines sourced from the Volkswagen Group inventory.

Prices range from $39,990 (before on-road costs) to $52,690. This opening figure is well above the previous B6 model’s $31,990 starting price and $46,690 flagship, but the company is claiming the new Superb offers a suitably paradigm-shifting step up in every other area to match.

Indeed, its B8 model code is two generations ahead of the old car. And with a name like ‘Superb’, the pressure really is on.

The main rivals are anything from the in-house Volkswagen Passat, to the Hyundai Genesis, to the Holden Commodore or even 'proper' luxury cars such as the Audi A6. The wagon version could even be seen as a crossover SUV alternative with a twist.

The entry-level engine is the EA888 2.0-litre turbo-petrol from the Octavia RS and Volkswagen Golf GTI and it produces 162kW of power at 6200rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1500rpm. These figures are up 37 per cent and 40 per cent respectively over the old 118TSI base car, while 95 RON premium unleaded fuel use is cut 11 per cent to 6.4 litres per 100km.

Next up is the 140kW/400Nm 140TDI, with its 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine claiming 4.8L/100km. All of these figures improve on the old Superb diesel by double-digit percentages.

The range-topper in the new Superb range is the 206TSI 4x4, with its potent 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 206kW of power at 6500rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1700rpm. Teaming with all-wheel drive, via a Haldex clutch, the all-paw 206TSI claims 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds.

The combination delivers more power than the old V6, while the downsizing has yielded 30 per cent greater fuel economy (7.3L/100km).

All Skoda Superb models, irrespective of engine, come standard with the Volkswagen Group's six-speed dual-clutch DSG wet-clutch automatic transmission.

The new Superb is larger than before: 28mm longer, 47mm wider, 6mm higher and 80mm longer in the wheelbase, giving even more cabin space. Its new MQB architecture also cuts 75kg of weight compared with the previous model.

Both the liftback the wagon are cavernous for the class — with cargo space with all seats in use of 625 litres and 650L respectively, expanding to 1760L and 1950L respectively with the back seats folded.

The old Superb’s two-piece tailgate has been ditched to save weight and cost, but neat touches such as bag hooks, velcro-backed moveable cargo fences, levers to drop the rear seats from the boot and a full-sized spare tyre under the floor make up for it.

From an ownership perspective, the Superb comes with the option of pre-paid servicing plans that cost $2650 for five years or 75,000km. You can also pay $1699 to expand the three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty to five years.

The all-new Skoda Superb offers high-end features (depending on spec) such as adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, virtual pedal (a foot-operated boot release), three-zone ventilation, ventilated seats, SmartLink Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, autonomous braking and blind-spot monitoring.
