2017 Audi A5 Sportback spied testing

The new 2017 Audi A5 Sportback, the five-door companion to the popular A5 coupe, has been spied in cold-weather testing this week.

With production expected to begin later this year and sales likely to commence locally in 2017, the next-generation A5 family is not far from showrooms.

As previously reported, the new A5's look won't be a radical departure from the current model, being more of an evolution rather than revolution.

The Sportback's design closely follows that of its coupe and cabriolet siblings, with a more squared-off front grille and more distinguished tail-light signature than the current model.

The new A5 family continues the manufacturer's latest evolution in its design language, already previewed by the latest TT sports car, Q7 SUV and the recently launched A4 sedan and wagon.

The biggest changes will be made under the skin, with the next A5 sharing the new Volkswagen Group MLB platform - which already underpins the new A4 and Q7 stablemates, which should help the next-generation A5 shed about 100 kilograms.

The A5 Sportback's engine line-up will most likely mirror the coupe and cabriolet variants, with a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines almost certain to feature, along with front and Quattro all-wheel drive drivetrain options.

Stay tuned for more information on the 2017 Audi A5 in the coming months.
