Ssangyong SIV-2 concept debuts at Geneva motor show

The Ssangyong SIV-2 concept that debuted at the 2016 Geneva motor show this week answers the question: "how would a bigger Ssangyong SUV look?"

No, we're not talking as big as the Rexton, but if the mid-sized Ssangyong concept model offers any indication of what a production model to sit between that and the Tivoli could look like, the answer to our rhetorical question could well be: "quite nice, actually".

The Ssangyong SIV-2 moves forward from the existing SIV-1 show car that debuted in Geneva in 2014, but this new model has been penned under the "Dynamic Motion" design philosophy. Check out the comparative concept car images below:

As you can see from the above images, the new model appears more aggressive and perhaps a little more mainstream than the original, which had some luxury appeal to it, at least from the outside.

So, how big is it? Not massive, with a length of 4440 millimetres, a width of 1855mm and a height of 1640mm, it's smaller than a Mazda CX-5. Obviously, Ssangyong already has a car in that size bracket - the Korando, which measures 4410mm long, and this could well be a precursor to a new-generation version of that car (which has been around since 2010).

It looks pretty substantial thanks to the high window-line and that sculpted C-pillar. It rides on a 2675mm wheelbase, which is 25mm longer than the Korando.

According to the Korean company, the SIV-2 has been designed with eco-mobility in mind, with potential powertrains including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric.

The concept model here is theoretically powered in part by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, which is teamed to a 10kW electric motor and 500Wh lithium-ion battery pack.

The computer-generated renderings of the interior are clearly for illustration purposes only, but the intention looks good, with Alcantara trim, wood and aluminium finishes and a four-seat layout that encompasses speakers in the actual seats. Neat.

There's also a very-widescreen touchscreen media system that spans the dash in front of the front passenger, which is said to be capable of engaging with "cutting-edge IT devices connecting with the latest technology available".
