Ford Fiesta ST200 revealed: UPDATE

It's what enthusiasts have been wanting: a Ford Fiesta ST with more power and extra hardcore mechanical bits. But the new Ford Fiesta ST200 that has been revealed ahead of the 2016 Geneva motor show isn't the RS we'd expected.

The more powerful Ford Fiesta ST200 model uses the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine which has been tweaked for 200PS of power (hence the name; 147kW in our speak) and 290Nm of torque. Those figures represent jumps of 13kW and 50Nm over the regular ST, and on overboost the engine can churn up to 158kW and 320Nm for as long as 15 seconds.

The front-drive hot-hatch retains its six-speed manual transmission, though the final drive ratio has been adjusted from 3.82 to 4.06, with the result being a quicker 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds (0.2sec quicker than the regular ST). The ST200's top speed is higher, too, up from 220km/h to 230km/h.

There have been changes made to the car's chassis, too. Ford claims to have enhanced the car's torque vectoring control and stability control system, while the front steering knuckles have also been tweaked. Further, the ST200 rides 15mm lower than the regular Fiesta ST, has bigger rear brakes, and - for anyone who has driven an ST, this may be hard to fathom - the ST200 gets a quicker and sharper steering rack.

The Fiesta ST200 model will be available with a new Storm Grey paint finish and 17-inch black alloy wheels covering red brake calipers. A bigger rear spoiler probably wouldn't have gone astray.

Inside, there are a few style changes including different trim on the Recaro sports seats (charcoal in colour), as well as silver detailing on the seatbelts and illuminated door sill scuff plates.

Update: Ford Australia isn't saying whether the new Fiesta ST200 will be sold here or not.

"As part of our leading local investment, we are focused on our expanded performance vehicle line-up – Mustang, Falcon Sprint, Fiesta, ST, Focus ST and the soon-to-be-released Focus RS – and cannot discuss future products," a statement from the brand said.

The local arm of the Blue Oval brand recently announced it was bringing the Mountune version of the Fiesta ST, which attracts a $2328 additional charge but pushes the power up to the same level: the Fiesta ST MP215 has 158kW/320Nm. No chassis or gearing changes are part of that pack, though.

An even more hardcore version of the Fiesta was rumoured for a long time, but it now seems clear there will be no Ford Fiesta RS model to follow in the treadmarks of the larger Focus RS.
