Porsche 718 Boxster cabin changes detailed

The new 718 Boxster’s cabin remains unmistakably Porsche, but changes have been implemented to upgrade what is now a familiar environment. The cabin benefits from traditional Porsche understatement, quality of design and execution. The leather trim, for example, features uninterrupted stitching that extends right to the storage compartment.

Porsche claims the relationship between car and driver is as important as ever, and the dynamic feel you get from behind the wheel of the Boxster won’t change.

"You need to feel like you are sitting down into the cabin of the Boxster," says Mitja Borket, general manager Advanced Design Style Porsche. "As is the case with any Porsche sportscar".

While the 911 might be the ultimate expression of Porsche technology, the Boxster has become the poster child for all-round balance, performance and driving feel. It’s important that this new 718 Boxster maintains that link to it’s original philosophy.

The upper section of the dash has also been revised, with elevated air vents the highlight. Drivers get a 376mm sports steering wheel in a design similar to that of the 918 Spyder. A GT sports steering wheel is available as an option, with the diameter dropping to 360mm. Five new interior colours will allow buyers to further personalise their new Boxster or Boxster S.

Like the 911s we’ve tested recently, new 718 Boxster is released with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system while optional modules are available to further enhance the practicality of the system. The ‘Connect’ module for example, comprises a smartphone storage tray for wireless connection of the handset to the Boxster’s exterior antenna, an iPod-capable USB port on the centre console, Apple CarPlay including Siri Voice Control and Porsche Car Connect.

The ‘Navigation’ module with voice control has improved map design and display, and can even show two maps simultaneously. It brings with it the handy feature of being able to input navigation controls with your voice, making for a much safer driving experience.

This module includes free map updates for the first three years. ‘Connect Plus’ is available as an extension of the navigation module. It enables simple interfacing of your smartphone to the PCM, wireless internet access for devices with wifi, as well as using online functions such as information navigation services.

The 718 Boxster and Boxster S models will be priced from $113,100 and $143,400 respectively, both plus on-road costs. These figures represent price increases of $8400 and $12,300 respectively. Order books are now open.
