Weekend deals on wheels:: February 27

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, which looks at six factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

Holden Astra VXR

As you can read in our comparison review with the Ford Focus ST, we really rate the Astra VXR.

This Euro hot hatch may be a little long in the tooth, but its extremely well-appointed and comes with the cred of a 206kW turbo engine, big Brembo brakes, a mechanical LSD and brilliant Nappa leather bucket seats.

Usually, this car retails for $39,990 before on-road costs, equating to an on-road price of about $44,000. But right now Holden is selling it for $39,990 drive-away, no more to pay, before haggling.

You also get a special five-year warranty and lifetime capped-price servicing, so it shouldn’t be especially troublesome to run. A good buy, this.

Kia Rio S

Let’s go to the other end of the three-door hatchback spectrum now. The Kia Rio is one of the sharpest-looking little numbers out there, and at $13,990 drive-away (or $15,990 with an auto) it’s a good buy.

Especially when you consider the regular on-road price of the Rio S is about $19,000 based drive-away pricing from RRP (way too steep).

This includes six airbags and Bluetooth. In addition, you get Kia Australia’s unbeatable seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

Mitsubishi ASX LS auto

Look, the Mitsubishi ASX isn’t the absolute class-leader, but you can never accuse Mitsubishi of being shy of offering a sharp deal.

The entry LS front-drive model with a CVT automatic usually goes for $26,990 before on-road costs based on RRP. But right now, you can get one for $25,000 drive-away.

Standard equipment is good, too. It includes seven airbags, 18-inch alloy wheels, a touchscreen infotainment system and rear-view camera with sensors.

Mitsubishi also gives you a five-year warranty. Another sharp deal if you’re not a huge car enthusiast. Keep in mind this deal only applies to existing stocks of 2015-plated stock.

Volkswagen Golf 92TSI Trendline wagon

With a regular on-road cost (based on factory RRP) of $32,000, a drive-away deal for a Volkswagen Golf Trendline wagon with 92TSI engine and seven-speed DSG auto for $28,990 is good.

Really, this makes a fantastic rival to something like a Hyundai Tucson if you don’t need to sit up high, since it has more cargo space than most SUVs.

Standard equipment includes a reverse-view camera and a touchscreen with App-Connect, meaning the integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Mercedes-Benz Vito 111 CDI

The Mercedes-Benz Vito 111 CDI commercial van has a RRP of $37,320 plus on-road costs, which means the current deal of $36,990 drive-away saves you thousands.

The Vito has a 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine with 84kW/270Nm, so it’s no firebrand, but it undercuts the listed price of an equivalent base Renault Trafic, so it’s a good deal.

Plus you get that typical Mercedes innovation, meaning adaptive ESP, an attention assist system and crosswind assist, though disappointingly you have to pay extra for side airbags.

Audi A3 range with Style Package

Audi’s A3 is the top-selling premium small car in the country, unless you cluster together the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and CLA.

Right now, across all three A3 body styles — hatch, sedan and convertible — Audi will give you a free Style Package, normally valued at $2000.

This gives you Xenon Plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, and upgrade alloy wheels that look pretty damn cool.

It’s not a huge deal, but worth looking at if you’re in the market.
