Holden looking to GMC Acadia to fill large SUV gap

Holden is reportedly evaluating the American GMC Acadia to fill a gap in its large SUV lineup.

The Acadia is a full-size SUV available in seven- and eight-seat configurations. If it were to launch in Australia, the Acadia would would compete in the same segment as the Toyota Kluger and Nissan Pathfinder.

The new-generation Acadia, revealed in Detroit earlier this year, will enter the North American market later this year.

If successfully evaluated as a genuine option for Holden's Australian range, we could see the big SUV on local shores for the 2018 model year.

Holden looked to the US market for large SUVs before, with a short run of right-hand-drive Suburbans offered for local sale between 1998 and 2000.

Holden remains tight-lipped on the Acadia's potential, a spokesman saying: “Acadia looks like a very exciting vehicle but we have no comment on future product.”

“We’ve said previously we’re focussed on the market’s growth segments so SUVs will be a big part of Holden’s strategy but have nothing specific to announce.”

Holden has already confirmed that the north-American market Chevrolet Trax will head to Australia in 2017, so other US-market cars are likely considerations.

What do you think? Is this the right move for Holden?

Given the choice of the SUV and pickup market in the US, what would you like to see cherry-picked from the GM shopping list to join Holden’s local fleet?
