2017 Maserati Levante exterior revealed – UPDATED
The exterior of the Maserati Levante SUV has been revealed ahead of the car's debut at the Geneva motor show at the end of the month.
Visually, the company's first SUV proves that patent drawings that were published online last year were bang on the money. Unusually for an SUV, the Levante features frameless door windows.
Maserati has yet to grace the world with images of the Levante's interior. For now, these spy photos will have to suffice.
The Italian luxury brand hasn't revealed full specifications of its first SUV, saying only that it will come standard with a Q4-branded all-wheel drive system, an eight-speed automatic, and a suspension system with air springs and electronically controlled dampers.
Under the bonnet, the Levante will be offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines.
Reports last year claimed that the petrol-powered Levante range will include a V6, built by Ferrari, in both 260kW and 335kW editions, as well as a range-topping V8 with around 430kW.
The diesel may be same the 3.0-litre V6 unit that's already used in the Ghibli and Quattroporte.
In the smaller sedan the diesel powerplant generates 184kW/570Nm, while in the larger vehicle it's been tuned to deliver 202kW/600Nm.
Maserati is known to be working on a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, and expectations are that it will make its debut as an drivetrain option on the Levante from around 2017.
Production of the brand's first crossover vehicle has already begun at the company's Mirafiori plant in Turin. We expect to learn and see more of the Levante when the covers are whipped off at the Geneva motor show.
The Levante will head into European showrooms during the second quarter of 2016. Sales in other parts of the world will begin in latter part of the year.
Australia
Maserati's Australian distributor, Ateco, has confirmed that the Levante will make its way to Australia and New Zealand in early 2017.
