2017 Lexus LC500h revealed

The wraps have been taken off the Lexus LC500h hybrid coupe ahead of its in-the-flesh debut at the 2016 Geneva motor show.

Under the car's resplendent blue body is a new take on the Toyota's hybrid drivetrain layout, dubbed Multi Stage Hybrid System, which has been developed for the company's performance-oriented vehicles.

Beneath the bonnet, the LC500h ditches the 5.0-litre V8 used in the LC500 for a 220kW 3.5-litre V6 mated to an electric motor.

While other Toyota and Lexus hybrids drive their wheels directly via an e-CVT, the LC500h employs a four-speed automatic on the rear axle. The weight of this extra transmission is offset by the use of a lithium-ion battery pack.

The LC500h has a total of 264kW of power at its disposal, and is said to be able to complete the 0-100km/h standard in under five seconds. Oddly, the company has yet to quote even ballpark fuel economy numbers.

By way of comparison, the LC500's 5.0-litre V8 generates 350kW and is said to be able to do complete a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) run in under 4.5 seconds.

The hybrid coupe rides on 20-inch cast alloy wheels as standard, with 20- and 21-inch forged rims optional. Regardless of the wheel size, the LC500h uses 245/40 run-flat tyres up front and 275/40 run-flat rubber at the rear.

Aside from the Multi Stage Hybrid and blue Lexus badges, the LC500h's body is unchanged from the V8 LC500. Both feature a carbonfibre roof and aluminium bonnet, fenders and door skins mounted to a carbonfibre structure.

The new LC coupe is the first vehicle to make use of Lexus' new GA-L rear-wheel drive architecture, which we'll also see underneath the next-generation LS sedan.
