Mercedes-AMG GT: Hardcore ‘GT R’ spotted winter testing

A sharper and even more aggressive version of the Mercedes-AMG GT has been spotted while undergoing winter testing.

Spied in light camouflage while undergoing winter testing, the wilder Mercedes-AMG GT - already dubbed the AMG GT R (until Nissan finds out anyway) - is expected to be a lighter, more track-focussed variant, to sit above the current 375kW/650Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8-powered GT S.

That said, early speculation suggests the AMG 'GT R' could still sit below the mooted and previously spied, AMG Black Series variant.

Wider than standard wheel arches, a bigger front air dam, a fixed rear spoiler and an underbody diffuser all point to the car being a GT3-type version of the already potent sports coupe.

With the standard GT S weighing 1645kg and claiming a sub-four-second 0-100km/h time, with its expected increase in power and reduction in weight, the possible 'R' version could dip close to the three-second mark.

The likelihood of any future road-going AMG GT variants coming to Australia remains unconfirmed, however, the current 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S remains an exclusive machine all on its own, with fewer than 50 cars gracing Australian roads to date.
