Ford plans common global styling for all cars

Ford's European design chief, Mr Martin Smith, said the brand is developing a new design language that will underpin its compact and mid-sized cars globally when speaking to press at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The styling will be an evolution of the automaker's current kinetic design and will be called "kinetic 2.0."

Ford is said to be harmonising the design of its cars in markets across the world as it unifies worldwide development of its compact and mid-sized cars to save money by achieving economies of scale.

"We are developing an appropriate design language that will work all over the world," Mr Smith said.

Currently, Ford uses kinetic design in Europe, Australia and selected other markets while in the US it uses a styling it calls "red, white and bold".

Usually, manufacturers have different car designs for different markets because they believe customers have different tastes in various parts of the globe, but Mr Smith said that with globalisation and the internet this no longer holds true.

"A killer car will work everywhere," Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith developed kinetic design after moving to Ford from Opel in 2004. The styling represents "energy in motion" and is aimed at giving Ford cars a sportier, more dynamic look.
