2016 Hyundai iLoad, iMax Series II pricing and specifications: New features, greater supply for Korean haulers

The Hyundai iLoad, Australia’s second-most-popular cargo van, has received a range of updates that bring it closer to its classy new European rivals such as the Volkswagen Transporter, Renault Trafic, Ford Transit Custom and Mercedes-Benz Vito.

At the same time, its Hyundai iMax people-mover derivative has also been given some running changes that position it closer to fellow van-based people-carriers out there, such as the just-launched Volkswagen Multivan.

Additionally, the company’s local operations says it has found a way to liberate greater supply out of Korea, meaning it should be able to improve on each model’s already strong sales performance.

Standard equipment in both iMax and iLoad Series II variants now includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with connectivity options including Siri Eyes Free (iOS) and Google Now (Android) voice activation. The main stack is also redesigned.

Other significant new standard equipment in iMax and iLoad Series II includes driver and outboard front passenger side (thorax) airbags, which complement their existing dual front SRS airbags. This puts the Hyundai up there with the class trendsetters.

For diesel automatic variants of each, cruise control is also now standard, while all liftback variants in both body styles (this excludes those iLoads optioned with barn doors) get a reverse-view camera as well.

The iMax Series II variants now get a “premium” steering wheel and gearknob. Both iMax and iLoad variants also now feature steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

The iMax also now includes climate-control front air conditioning. Second- and third-row passengers still have access to separate manual air conditioning controls and roof-mounted air vents.

Previously available only in the iMax, a 12-volt power outlet is now located below the centre console on the iLoad Series II variants as well.

The iMax Series II comes standard in eight-seat configuration. The iLoad is available with either a liftback tailgate or optional ($550 extra) twin-swing rear doors (the latter sans camera), and is again available in either three-seat van or six-seat Crew Van configurations.

Finally, exterior styling changes include new-look grilles, front bumpers, tailgate garnishes, a relocated radio aerial and – for iMax Series II variants – newly-designed 16-inch alloy wheels and fog lights. Also new for the iMax Series II are electric folding exterior mirrors.

Engines are familiar. The Petrol is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder with 127kW/240Nm. It is available with a manual-only arrangement in the iLoad, and auto-only in the iMax.

The 2.5-litre turbo-diesel with six-speed manual makes 100kW/343Nm, while with the five-speed auto it gets 125kW/441Nm, courtesy of a different tune. Both manual and auto versions are available across both ranges.

In 2015, the Hyundai iLoad played second fiddle to the dominant Toyota HiAce in the sales race, with 4597 sales (up 5.8 per cent) and 26.9 per cent segment share.

The iMax managed 1939 sales (down 9.3 per cent), making it third-in-class behind the more car-like Kia Carnival and Honda Odyssey.

“Although supply-constrained, the iMax and its iLoad sibling continually have been strong performers in Australia,” said HMCA COO Scott Grant.

“Thanks to their impressive new array of premium high-tech features and with increased local supply now guaranteed, we’re confident our new iMax and iLoad Series II variants will be even more popular with Australian buyers,” he added.
