The Jaguar F-Pace crossover SUV will swiftly overtake the new XE as the British-based company’s top-seller in Australia once it launches in July, and will more importantly bring much-needed female buyers to a traditionally male-dominated brand.
Jaguar Land Rover Australia managing director Matthew Wiesner told CarAdvice this week that local reception to the company’s first crossover had been massive. After pricing was announced in December, its website got a month’s worth of traffic in a single day.
“I think F-Pace will be the volume car for Jaguar absolutely,” he said, adding that JLR Australia had already taken almost 100 firm orders, though its pre-sale campaign won’t even begin until about April. Consider, the XE averages about 140 sales a month, which is chump change for even a lower-selling luxury mid-sized SUV.
The Porsche Macan-rivalling Jaguar F-Pace is a sporty crossover, billed as a contender that serves different buyers to the rugged and practical Land Rover Discovery Sport, style-angled Range Rover Evoque, or more luxury-focused Range Rover Sport.
“It broadens our consideration,” Wiesner said. “It brings a lot more female consideration… Jaguar has very much been a male-dominated brand,” he added. Vehicles such as the XE and F-Pace help Jaguar Land Rover foster — vitally — more multi-car households.
Asked if he was concerned at the prospects of the F-Pace snipping sales from Land Rover product, Wiesner said: “If it happens, it happens…"
Importantly, JLR Australia is nowadays directing all its dealers to sell both Jaguar and Land Rover products, plus the latter’s Range Rover sub-brand.
The Jaguar F-Pace will complement what is a fast-growing Land Rover presence in Australia's booming SUV market. Land Rover grew 17.7 per cent last year to 11,885 units. In January this year it managed 1173, up 34.1 per cent and got within 100 units of Jeep. The Discovery Sport outsold the Audi Q5 and the Range Rover Sport outsold the Mercedes-Benz GLE, to name two successful examples.
As you can read in our full pricing and specifications story, the F-Pace range will kick off at $74,340 plus on-road costs, for a version powered by a 132kW/430Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel. You can step up into either the 220kW/700Nm 30d 3.0-litre diesel at $84,590 or the 250kW/450Nm 35t petrol at $84,030.
The hero of the ongoing range, in price and power if not in torque, is the $103,420 280kW/450Nm F-Pace S – although a special First Edition model will also be offered from launch, priced at $120,700.
All models are matched to a ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission and torque-on-demand all-wheel drive.
