Suzuki to bring Baleno to Australia: Mid-2016 arrival, priced from around $18,000

Suzuki Australia has begun the regulatory registration process required to bring the new Suzuki Baleno to Australia, suggesting the business case for it to be sold in Australia has been approved.

CarAdvice sources suggest that the Baleno, revealed at last year's Frankfurt motor show, will be launched in Australia by mid-2016. An opening price of around $18,000 is likely, with a five-speed manual transmission as the starting point.

Images of the Baleno on a government website (top of article) reveal a five-door (albeit overseas left-hand-drive) configuration that will compete against vehicles like the Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, Skoda Fabia, Holden Spark and Kia Rio.

The new Baleno measures 3995mm in length, 1745mm in width and 1500mm in height, with a 2520mm wheelbase. The cavernous boot caters for 339 litres of cargo capacity.

The Baleno is sold in a number of international markets with the option of several petrol and a single diesel offering.

At the entry level, a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre Dualjet four-cylinder petrol engine produces 66kW of power and 120Nm of torque.

The next step up is a 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine, which features three-cylinders and a turbocharged petrol engine that's directly injected and produces 82kW of power and 170Nm of torque.

While not currently produced for the Baleno, the Boosterjet range also includes a more powerful turbocharged 103kW/220Nm 1.4-litre variant, featured in the Vitara S.

There is also a diesel available in the range, which is a 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel that produces 82kW of power and 190Nm of torque. Gearboxes are limited to a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic and a CVT.

It's unclear at this stage which engines will be available in Australia, but the 1.0-litre Boosterjet seems like a sure bet given its power output amongst its competitors, with the diesel and lower output petrol model unlikely starters.
