Mazda CX-6/CX-4 crossover spotted again

This leak comes one week after our first look at the production crossover. This red example of what appears to be an upper-spec car, spotted near the factory in Changchun by CarNewsChina.

As we have reported, it seems likely that the Mazda CX-4/6 will be sold initially in China, where it will be produced with its joint-venture partner. Expect production to be added in Japan, and a subsequent rollout to western markets, shortly after.

This latest batch of images shows a production car that looks at least somewhat similar to the stunning Koeru concept from last year’s Frankfurt motor show. Though those exhaust pipes appear a little underdone.

Interior photographs of the car reveal a premium leather interior, electrically assisted handbrake, push-button start, Mazda MZD Connect controller and new, premium looking gauges. Previous images have showed a heads-up display module.

The new Mazda crossover is based on the company’s modular SkyActiv architecture. CarNewsChina states the dimensions as 4635mm long (a smidgen longer than the Koeru), on a 2700mm wheelbase with 210mm of ground clearance. It either measured the car or it’s making an educated guess…

Given this is about 100mm longer than the Mazda CX-5, we’d suggest this car might wear CX-6 badges, though many reports elsewhere are speculating CX-4. We will find out before its world premiere at April’s Beijing motor show.

Expect the car to be powered by the CX-5’s 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines in China. Once might speculate that the company’s 2.2 diesel might wait until European versions are developed.

Given the global SUV boom, it makes a world of sense for Mazda to spin off a sporty derivative.

We’ve seen BMW do it with the X6 and the smaller X4, Mercedes-Benz has the GLE Coupe and will have the GLC Coupe, and Volkswagen has confirmed it will built coupe-style versions of its new SUV range, including the Tiguan and other smaller models.
