Mini Clubman All4 revealed :: AWD wagon ruled out for Australia

The new all-drive version of the Mini Clubman is available with both the entry-level three-cylinder turbo engine in the Cooper and the more powerful, sportier Cooper S 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo model, and is available with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearbox options.

The Mini Clubman All4 has been unveiled, with the new all-wheel-drive wagon designed first and foremost for the US and European markets.

According to Mini, the electronically controlled AWD system can distribute torque between the front and rear wheels depending on what's happening underneath the car. It defaults to front-drive, with the rear axle being used only when required.

That extra traction positively impacts the performance of both models, too, with "spontaneous and spirited power delivery" - the Cooper S manual can run from 0-60mph (96km/h) in a claimed 6.7 seconds, while the eight-speed auto claims 6.6sec. That's an improvement of 0.3sec compared with the front-drive Cooper S model.

Mini Australia general manager of corporate communications, Lenore Fletcher, told CarAdvice that the Clubman All4 model doesn't fit with the brand's intentions locally.

"At this point, we are not looking at taking the Clubman All4. We currently offer a brand new Clubman, alongside our popular Countryman, and we feel we have covered our customers’ requirements here in Australia’s smaller market with these two vehicles. Should this situation change, we’ll be sure to let you know," she said.
