2016 Lexus RX gets ANCAP five-star score
The new Lexus RX large SUV — the company’s rival to the BMW X5 and co. — unsurprisingly received a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating this week.
Australia’s safety watchdog awarded the latest RX, launched at the end of 2015, a respectable 83 per cent in adult protection, 82 per cent in child protection, 79 per cent for pedestrian protection and 74 per cent for its preventative and active safety systems.
The maximum rating applies to all Lexus RX variants. Dual frontal, side chest and side head airbags, and a driver knee airbag are standard. Ditto Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). ANCAP computed its rating from Euro NCAP testing.
As you can read in our pricing and specifications story, the new Lexus RX is priced from $73,000 plus on-road costs through to $106,000 — price increases over the old model by as much as $13,000 in return for more equipment and space.
“The RX joins a competitive SUV market and offers a range of safety assist technologies as standard, including AEB, lane support system and reverse collision avoidance,” ANCAP CEO James Goodwin said.
“These new technologies can help avoid a crash in the first place and so we would urge consumers to look for a car with not only good structural performance, but with features to potentially prevent a collision.
“It’s encouraging to see the Lexus achieve the highest pedestrian protection rating of ‘good’, scoring maximum points for the protection provided to pedestrian’s legs and pelvic region.
“In the frontal offset test the passenger compartment of the RX held its shape well and all doors remained closed and there was good protection for the driver in the side impact test.”
