2016 Ssangyong New Cars

A spokesman for Ssangyong’s Australian distributor, Ateco Automotive, told us there was “potentially some good new stuff” coming for the South Korean brand in 2016 but “nothing we are able to talk about yet”.

The most likely introduction is the updated Rexton SUV, which was introduced to the UK and Europe in December.

The key enhancement for the Rexton is a new 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The new engine produces 131kW and 400Nm, giving it a 16kW/40Nm advantage over the current car’s 2.0-litre unit.

The engine is teamed with a new Mercedes-Benz-produced seven-speed automatic transmission, which replaced the five-speed auto in the 2015 Rexton.

Ssangyong says the new combination improves performance and refinement while cutting fuel consumption and emissions.

Meanwhile, the compact Tivoli SUV remains under a cloud for our market. The new model was initially planned to reach our shores during 2015 and even completed hot-weather testing Down Under, though the business case is presenting some challenges for Ateco.

Among those is the fact the Tivoli is smaller than the Korando, but wouldn’t be profitable if it was priced too far below that car’s $21,990 driveaway starting price.
