2016 Ram New Cars

Ram Trucks officially launched in Australia in November 2015 under new distributor American Special Vehicles, a joint venture between Ateco Automotive and Walkinshaw Automotive.

As announced at launch, 2016 will see the company re-engineer Ram 2500 Laramie and 3500 Laramie trucks to factory standards in Melbourne at a new assembly line belonging to the Walkinshaw Automotive Group.

Pricing kicks off at $139,500 plus on-road costs for the 2500 and climbs to $146,500 for the 3500 – more than twice the price of a Ford Ranger Wildtrak, but competitive with rival conversion companies like Performax.

Both are powered by a 6.7-litre Cummins turbo diesel engine producing 276kW and a mammoth 1084Nm of torque through a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission with three multiple clutch packs.

The Ram 2500 can tow 6989kg while the Ram 3500 (which requires its owner to possess a truck license) can tow 6170kg. In terms of payload, the coil-sprung 2500 can haul 913kg and the leaf-sprung 3500 a massive 1713kg in its tray.

ASV has full-volume import approval, meaning it can import as many Ram trucks as it wants. The trucks are fully ADR complaint, and have been designed to exactly match the ex-factory LHD versions in every aspect.

ASV aims to produce 500 cars over the coming 12 months and will ramp things up in time. A full re-engineering job takes about 20 hours.
