Mercedes-Benz SLC convertible confirmed for 2016 Detroit auto show debut

The Mercedes-Benz SLK will soon be no more. In its place will be the Mercedes-Benz SLC convertible, which CarAdvice has learned will be revealed at the 2016 Detroit auto show.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLC drop-top will see some revisions compared with its forebear, including a revamped front-end design with new headlights and grille, a new rear bumper, a revamped interior and updated engine range. The car you see above is a prototype with the current designed front, but see below for a better idea of the front the new SLC will put forward.

As for those powertrains, expect an updated 2.0-litre turbo petrol to take the place of the existing 1.8-litre that currently sits under the bonnet of the SLK200 and SLK300 models.

The SLC200 is expected to pump out 135kW and 300Nm, and the SLC300 should be good for 180kW and 370Nm. The SLC200 will likely have the choice of a six-speed manual or nine-speed auto, while the SLC300 will likely be auto only.

Nothing is clear beyond that, though the brand could offer a higher-spec SLC400 (in lieu of the SLK350) with a new turbocharged six-cylinder petrol, while a Mercedes-AMG SLC is a certainty, too, possibly with the new 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine, or it may retain the old 5.5-litre V8 of the SLK 55 AMG.

The interior is likely to see some changes, too, including an updated dash with new Comand media system, and revised materials, too. Current SLK seen below:
