Mercedes-Benz S400 joins S-Class Coupe range, but not for Australia
A new entry-level S400 4Matic variant has joined the 2016 S-Class Coupe line-up in Europe, but, just like the V12 S600, Mercedes-Benz Australia will be leaving this one alone.
Local options for buyers looking at the S-Class Coupe range kick off with the 4.7-litre V8-powered S500 at $319,000, stepping up to the $409,000 5.5-litre V8 AMG S63 and the big V12-driven $499,000 S65.
Adding the 3.0-litre V6 petrol S400 to the local range would cut the price of entry into the S-Class Coupe club, but according to Mercedes-Benz Australia, sales of the S500 and S63 are already exceeding expectations.

And, as shown by the company’s leap directly to the more expensive ‘S’ variants of many of its AMG models - skipping the regular option - Australian buyers already have a clear preference for the most powerful and capable choice available.
The US market is likewise skipping the S400 variant, but buyers in Europe going for the new entry option will be greeted to a far-from-paltry 269kW of power and 500Nm of torque.
Fuel consumption is listed at 8.3L/100km on the European test cycle, making the V6 S400 only slightly more efficient - officially, at least - than the S500 and its local 8.6L/100km figure.

Mercedes-Benz says the S400 Coupe will hit 100km/h in a respectable 5.6 seconds, making the V8-powered S500 a full second quicker over the same distance.
In Europe, the S400’s standard features will include dual-zone Thermotronic automatic climate control, Comand online multimedia system, Active Park Assist with ParkTronic, Pre-Safe, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, LED Intelligent Light System, active light function, cornering light function, enhanced fog light function, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and AirMatic air suspension.
