Toyota Prius reaches 2 million sales milestone

Only six months after reaching the 1 million US sales milestone Toyota's environmental crusader, the Prius, has topped global sales exceeding 2 million units.

The first Prius came to the Japanese market back in 1997 before spreading to the US and Europe in 2000. The North American market accounts for more than half of all Toyota's hybrid sales (1.15 million to date).

Toyota sells 13 hybrid vehicles in 50 countries, including hybrid versions of the Toyota Camry, Crown and Harrier, as well as the Lexus GS, LS and RX.

Toyota hopes to sell 1 million hybrids annually by early next decade.
