BMW M2 coupe preliminary pricing and specifications leaked: M2 Pure from $89,900, M2 from $98,900

The BMW M2 coupe looks set to be available from under $90,000 plus on-road costs when it arrives in Australia in the second quarter of 2016.

Enthusiast site Ausmotive has published what it claims are the full local pricing and specifications of the pint-sized performance hero. The source of the information is unclear, though it’s likely to have come from a dealer bulletin or some other internal communication.

It reveals that BMW Australia will offer a six-speed manual-only M2 Pure variant from $89,900 and the regular M2 (available with manual and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions) from $98,900.

The pricing would make the M2 Pure exactly $10,000 cheaper than its spiritual predecessor, the 1 Series M Coupe, while even the fully equipped M2 would still slide $1000 under the old mark.

According to the leaked specifications, the M2 coupe will justify its $9000 premium over the Pure by gaining adaptive headlights with high beam assistant, the comfort access system, electric and heated front seats with driver’s-side memory, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and a vehicle alarm system.

Both variants will come standard with equipment levels worthy of their position at the top of the BMW 2 Series range. Specification highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels, Dakota leather upholstery, Professional Navigation system with 8.8-inch display and iDrive touch controller, Driving Assistant suite with lane departure and pedestrian warnings, and the ConnectedDrive suite with intelligent emergency call, real-time traffic information and internet connectivity.

Naturally, both will be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine producing 272kW at 6500rpm and 465Nm between 1400-5560rpm. Dual-clutch variants will be both faster and more efficient than their manual counterparts (0-100km/h in 4.3sec vs 4.5sec; 7.9L/100km vs 8.5L/100km combined cycle fuel consumption).

A BMW Australia spokesman this morning said he could not comment on the leaked pricing and specifications, offering only that M2 coupe details were still being finalised ahead of the car’s local introduction in the coming months.

Official information is expected to be released in the coming days.
