Lamborghini Centenario special to debut in Geneva – report

Lamborghini is expected to celebrate 100 years since the birth of its founder with a heroic new special-edition model in 2016, which will reportedly be known as the Centenario.

Although the name is still to be confirmed, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told the UK’s Auto Express this week that fans can expect to see a very special new offering unveiled at the Geneva motor show in March.

“You are familiar with our one-offs - it will be something like this, a coupe bodystyle. And it will initiate the celebration of the 100 years,” Winkelmann said.

Styling is expected to be distinctly different to the sharp-edged supercars that Lamborghini has become known for.

And, while Winkelmann offered few details, concepts like the 2008 Estoque (above) and last year’s Asterion (below) offer a clear view of the carmaker’s willingness to revisit the classic lines of its past.

“It is a car which is covering the best balance between tradition and innovation because we are speaking about performance, design, weight, aerodynamics and also the chassis in terms of adaptability control,” Winkelmann told Auto Express.

As with cars like the Reventon and Sesto Elemento before it, the so-called Centenario will be a limited-edition offering, and this latest report suggests that just 20 examples will be built.

The report adds that motivation will be provided by a powered-up version of the 6.5-litre V12 that already pumps 552kW through the Aventador Superveloce.

Watch for the carmaker’s tribute to Ferrucio Lamborghini to make its debut in March.
