2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, AMG A45 pricing and specifications: Styling boost, upgraded features, new pricing

Australian pricing and details for the refreshed 2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class range have been released today, ahead of a local debut set to occur in January.

Pricing has increased across the A-Class range, with the A180 now up $1300 to $37,200 plus on-road costs, through to a $2200 increase for the now $77,900 Mercedes-AMG A45.

Revealed in June, the lightly re-styled A-Class gets new LED headlights and what Mercedes-Benz describes as a “more arrow-shaped” front bumper, along with new-look internals for the LED tail lamps and new exhaust finishers in the rear bumper.

The AMG A 45 also gets a refreshed look that brings it further in-line with its larger performance-focused siblings.

Inside, there’s an updated “tubular design” instrument cluster with new graphics, while the dash gets revised switches and an updated display with Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink integration.

The model spread again includes the entry-level petrol A180, the A200 and A200d petrol and diesel twins, the sporting A250 Sport and the hero Mercedes-AMG A45.

The A180 is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 90kW and 200Nm of torque. Matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, the entry A-Class hatch lists fuel use at 5.8 L/100km. These figures are identical to the outgoing A180.

In the A200, the 1.6 turbo engine’s outputs are dialled up to 115kW and 250Nm, matched to a seven-speed DCT auto. Fuel use is listed at 6.1L/100km, again mirroring the outgoing model’s figures.

The A200d gets a 100kW/300Nm 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, combined with the seven-speed DCT auto for an unchanged fuel consumption figure of 4.2L/100km.

For the Golf GTI-rivalling all-wheel drive A250 Sport 4Matic, there’s a 160kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, matched to a seven-speed DCT auto for a fuel use figure 6.7L/100km. Compared to the outgoing model, this represents a 5kW power boost and 0.1L/100km increase in fuel use.

Rounding out the range is the upgraded Mercedes-AMG A45 4Matic, with its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine now producing 280kW and 475Nm - up from 265kW and 450Nm.

This drops the extra-hot-hatch’s 0-100km/h time from 4.6 to 4.2 seconds - but the improvement also brings an increase in fuel use, rising from 6.9 to 7.3L/100km for the 2016 model.

Standard kit with the A180 includes 17-inch alloy wheels, ‘Diamond’ grille highlights, blind spot assist, reversing camera, keyless start, Dynamic Select driving modes and Garmin Map Pilot navigation with an 8.0-inch display and Bluetooth phone/media connectivity.

The A200 models upgrade to 18-inch alloy wheels, power-folding mirrors and sports seats with lumber support.

For the A250 Sport, there’s 18-inch AMG wheels, AMG styling, AMG Ride Control suspension, LED headlights, Keyless-Go, a panoramic sunroof and ambient interior lighting with 12 colour options.

The hero AMG A45 gets AMG Dynamic Plus and AMG Dynamic Select with Race Mode, along with 19-inch AMG wheels, AMG performance seats, AMG performance exhaust, COMAND navigation and Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound.

Standard safety features with all models includes nine airbags, Pre-Safe and Collision Prevention Plus, and an Active Bonnet for pedestrian protection. The A45 adds Distronic Plus and Lane Keeping Assist (Passive).
