Mazda Australia recalls 60,000 older models for electrical fix

Models listed in the recall include the 121 DB10 sedan and hatch, 323 BG10 sedan and hatch, 323 BA10 sedan and hatch, 626 GE10 and GE20L2, Eunos 30X EC108 hatch, MPV LV10E wagon, 929 HD10E sedan and the 929 HE10E1.

The recall, which forms part of a wider action affecting millions worldwide - including nearly 1.4 million in the US - centres on a potential electrical fault that could result from an excessive application of grease to the contact points inside the ignition.

“The grease may carbonise due to heat from the electric arc generated during switch operation. The carbonised grease may accumulate between the electrical contacts (moving contact and fixed contact), reducing the electrical insulation performance inside the switch,” the recall notice states.

In the event of carbonisation, which means a hardening of the grease, the risk of smoke appears, potentially leading to a fire in worst-case situations.

Speaking with CarAdvice today, a Mazda Australia spokesperson said that although the recall affects around 60,000 vehicles, “some of the cars in question are getting old and we are still to ascertain whether all known cars are still registered and on the road”.
