Uber Australia:: 10 million rides can’t be wrong

Uber Australia has announced a local milestone with the company celebrating its 10 millionth UberX passenger ride since launching less than two years ago, despite a huge cloud of controversy locally over its operation.

Although the company's rapid acceptance with the commuting public over such a short period is impressive, the milestone is made even more notable by the fact that legislation in most regions makes it illegal to drive for for the UberX program.

The accomplishment also shows that despite claims by the New South Wales Taxi Council that ride-sharing is "no safer than hitch-hiking", the company has not struggled to pick up customers.

Legal issues aside (we've covered the company's struggle in length here), Uber says that its success is thanks largely to short wait times and greater affordability.

According to Uber's own data, the company boasts an average vehicle arrival time of just 4.4 minutes, and the rides taken by passengers are around 40 per cent more affordable than comparable forms of transport.

Another milestone also hit by the company is one million passenger rides from popular nightspots after midnight on Friday and Saturday nights; further cementing the public's trust in a tracked, cashless transport system.

Interestingly, 64 per cent of UberX rides have originated from areas underserved by public transport, according to the company. It's these customers that are left with little or no option to get home between legs of their journey on public transport.

Uber has even caused controversy at CarAdvice with an opinion piece striking a chord with both sides of the fence.

What do you think of Uber? Have you used the service and would you recommend it to others?
