2016 BMW 7 Series pricing and specifications

Although the new BMW 7 Series will be officially launched down under in November, the company's local arm has decided to announce the range topping sedan's specifications and pricing in advance.

All up, the company will offer Australian buyers the choice of five sixth-generation 7 Series models, starting at $217,500 for the 730d and going up to $312,700 for the 750Li, before the inclusion of on-road costs.

The 730d, 740i and 740Li begin heading into Australian showrooms from November, but the 750i and 750Li models won't arrive down under until the first quarter of 2016. BMW claims that the new car features up to an additional $20,000 worth of standard equipment compared to the outgoing model.

Under the skin, the new 7 Series is the first mainstream model from the brand to feature the company's new Carbon Core architecture, which utilises carbonfibre-reinforced plastic, aluminium and steel to reduce weight by up to 130 kilograms.

Kicking off the new 7 Series range is the 730d, which features a 3.0-litre straight-six turbo-diesel engine under the bonnet with 195kW of power and 620Nm of torque — up 5kW/60Nm on the old model.

According to BMW, the 730d's fuel economy is now just 4.9L/100km compared to 5.6L/100km on the old car. The new 730d complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.1 seconds, the same time as the outgoing version.

If spark ignition motivation is more your thing, the 7 Series range begins with the 740i and 740Li, both of which feature a 240kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol motor.

The 740i is capable of a 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds, while the 740Li can complete the same metric in 5.6 seconds. Although power is only up 5kW on the outgoing model, fuel economy has dropped from 7.9L/100km to 7.0L/100km.

New standard features on the 730d, 740i and 740Li include 19-inch alloy wheels, a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon surround sound system, heated front seats and armrests, Professional navigation system, gesture control for the iDrive infotainment system, Nappa leather upholstery, and the company's new Display Key, which includes a touchscreen display and can operate at a distance of up to 300m away.

Also new and standard to the 7 Series range is the Touch Command system, which allows rear seat passengers to control infotainment and comfort functions, surf the internet, and playback audio and video files via a detachable seven-inch tablet.

Other standard items include air suspension, an eight-speed automatic transmission, adaptive LED headlights, ventilated front seats, DAB+ digital radio, reversing camera, parking sensors, soft close doors, surround view camera setup, and sunroof (panoramic on the 740Li).

There's also electric blinds, internet connectivity, ConnectedDrive services, hands-free boot operation, lane keeping assistance, forward and pedestrian collision warning, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and active cruise control that works in stop/start traffic.

At the top of the pile, for now, is the 750i and 750Li, which is powered by a 330kW/650Nm turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol motor. Although these models don't sport any extra power, fuel economy has improved from 8.6L/100km to 8.1L/100km in the SWB model and 8.3L/100km in the LWB car.

Performance has improved slightly, as both are capable of finishing the 0-100km/h dash in 4.7 seconds — 0.1s faster than before.

The 750i and 750Li both add 20-inch alloy wheels, laser headlights with selective beam control, dynamic damper control, TV reception for the infotainment setup, and Executive Drive Pro that includes automatic electro-mechanical roll stabilisation and anticipatory chassis control.

For the long-wheelbase 750Li, there's also heated, ventilated and electrically controlled rear seats, a massage function built into both the front and rear seats, panoramic sunroof, and a rear seat entertainment package.

All models in the new 7 Series range can be fitted with the M Sport package for no extra cost. For now, the company isn't offering either the plug-in hybrid 730e model or the xDrive all-wheel drive system down under.
