Mercedes-Benz teases sleek autonomous van for Tokyo motor show

Mercedes-Benz is the latest to embrace the theme of autonomous driving for the 2015 Tokyo motor show, previewing a futuristic driverless van concept today.

The German carmaker has revealed very little about the new van, dubbed Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo, although it promises a “luxurious and progressive” approach to the concept’s features and technology.

The shadowy teaser shown here is our only view of the concept for now, and it remains to be seen if the Vision will focus on commercial load-hauling purposes or a spacious lifestyle-focused interior. (Slot in some side windows and you’d have a next-generation V-Class…)

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a number of self-driving prototypes in the past year, including the odd lounge-themed F015 concept in January and the big FT 2025 truck - a concept which has evolved even further under the Freightliner banner.

Out here in the real world, Mercedes also offers its Intelligent Drive system, which offers an advanced level of semi-autonomous driving.

Watch for the Vision Tokyo to make its debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, which opens later this week.
