Toyota Tarago set to continue unchanged
There’s officially nothing to talk about when it comes to the Toyota Tarago people-mover, which has been sold in its current guise since 2006.
The Tarago continues to track along reasonably well in the sales stakes, averaging 75 sales per month so far this year.
But with new competitors in the form of the Kia Carnival (averaging 285 units per month) and Honda Odyssey (241 per month), the Tarago is lagging behind.
According to Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, the Tarago isn’t going anywhere despite there being no new features or updates for the model since 2013.
“We still sell it, yes!” Cramb said, laughing.
“There’s absolutely nothing to talk about with the Tarago. There’s nothing on the horizon,” he said.
“If you went back in time and had a look at our Tarago sales, they don’t change much year-on-year. So there’s no problem, it doesn’t cost us anything to bring it in, and there’s definitely a group of customers that want that vehicle.”
Indeed, the Tarago became the first people-mover to hit 100,000 units in Australian history – but it’s fair to say it is well down on its heyday period in the 1990s and earlier 2000s.
Still, Cramb said there are buyers out there that appreciate the ageing Tarago for what it is.
“From our point-of-view, it’s trouble free. No plans to change, and no plans to announce.”
