Toyota S-FR will have 1.5-litre engine, significantly undercut MX-5 – report

Details about the small, rear-wheel drive Toyota S-FR coupe concept have been revealed in the Japanese media.

According to a report published in a Japanese automotive magazine, and republished by S-FR Forums, the S-FR will be powered a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine.

The 2NR-FKE engine, which is used in the smaller Japanese domestic market Corolla, has been uprated with direct injection and revised ports. In the S-FR, the 1.5-litre four-pot will develop 110kW of power and 148Nm of torque.

Drive will go to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The report indicates that Toyota will not offer an automatic transmission, at least not initially.

With weight reported to 980 kilograms in base trim, performance should be spritely if not tyre shredding. The suspension setup will incorporate struts up front and double wishbones at the rear.

When Toyota first announced the S-FR concept earlier this month, it didn't provide much information, except that the car measures 3990mm long, 1695mm wide, 1320mm tall and sits on a 2480mm wheelbase.

That means the S-FR is a little longer and taller, and a smidge narrower the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5, which is 3915mm long, 1730mm wide, 1235mm tall and rides on a 2315mm wheelbase.

The reports states the S-FR will, at least in Japan, significantly undercut the MX-5. The S-FR's pricing is rumoured to start from around 1.5 million yen ($17,000), whereas the base MX-5 has a sticker price of 2,494,800 yen ($28,000) in its homeland.

Toyota's S-FR concept will debut in the flesh at the end of this month at the 2015 Tokyo motor show.
