2016 Peugeot 208 pricing and specifications: More models, sharper entry price

The refreshed 2016 Peugeot 208 range will go on sale in Australia later this month, the carmaker has confirmed today, following its unveiling at March’s Geneva motor show.

Arriving with lightly revised styling and new gear, the updated 208 range also welcomes new variants and a significantly sharper price of entry.

Thanks to the debut of a new base-model 208 Access grade, pricing now starts from $15,990 plus on-road costs - compared to $19,990 drive-away for the outgoing range’s Active model, which had likewise been reduced from an earlier $19,990 plus on-roads price.

The Access begins with a five-speed manual and a 60kW/185Nm 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech petrol engine, although a $18,990 automatic Access model is also available, equipped with a new six-speed unit and a more powerful 81kW/205Nm 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech turbo petrol engine that replaces the outgoing 88kW 1.6-litre unit.

Fuel figures for the refreshed line-up are still to come.

Peugeot says the Access models signal “Peugeot’s intention to speak directly to first car-buyers and the younger end of the Compact market”.

The Active model continues, although its price has climbed to $21,990 plus on-road costs (it launched in 2012 from $21,490). The mid-spec Allure likewise remains, priced from $25,990 (up from $24,490).

The three-door 208 GTi remains the line-up’s flagship model, picking up a more powerful engine and returning to its earlier $30,990 point after a brief drop to $29,990 earlier this year, while a new GT-Line variant slots in underneath with a $27,490 price tag.

Now driving the 208 GTi is a revised turbocharged 1.6-litre Euro 6 engine that delivers 153kW and 300Nm of torque, up from 147kW and 275Nm in the outgoing model.

Fans will recognise this as the same engine that powered the limited-edition 208 GTi 30th Anniversary, which boasted a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds.

One step down is the GT-Line model, driven by the same 81kW 1.2-litre turbo engine found in the Allure, but packing a number of sports-styled features that include 17-inch alloy wheels, piano black and gloss red highlights, sports seats and more. (See full list below.)
