2016 Holden Commodore VFII teased ahead of September 13 debut: “Greatest Commodore ever built”

Dubbed the “greatest Commodore ever built”, the VFII will make its official debut on September 13. The update is expected to be the last major revision to the range, although fans can likely expect a series of special-edition models to appear between now and the end of Holden’s Australian manufacturing programme in 2017.

Although obscured by the cover of night, we can be certain that the model shown in the above teaser is of the sports variety - likely the SV6 or the V8-powered SS models (as spied below).

Standout styling tweaks for the VFII include a lightly revised grille shape, with more distinctly sculpted points at either end and a softened bottom edge. A stepped louvre design sits behind the large lion badge, wrapped by a bold new frame for a more premium look.

An all-new bumper design is also evident, with a slender letterbox opening nestled between the grille and a longer new air dam that does away with the chrome piping frame of the outgoing VF Commodore.

Reshaped side ports flank the broad centre opening, with a taller and more pronounced housing dominated by a lightly tweaked design to the LED daytime lights.

This teaser, along with CarAdvice’s earlier spy photos of a camouflaged SS V suggest that the VF Commodore’s headlight design will carry over to the refreshed VFII range, although we may yet see a subtle re-sculpting.

Our earlier shots also hint at a largely unchanged design through the profile and at the rear, however this too could change between now and the range’s unveiling in eight days.

Changes to the Commodore’s already well-equipped cabin appear minor, with only a pair of steering-mounted gear-shift paddles standing out as obvious new additions in the SS V model spied by CarAdvice.

Reports of the 2016 VFII Commodore’s coming have been circulating since the VF Commodore first debuted in October last year, but only in recent weeks have any concrete details begun to surface.

CarAdvice revealed in July that the 2016 SSV is likely to be driven by a revised version of GM’s ‘L98’ LS3 6.2-litre V8 engine, dubbed - of course - L99.

While the current mill turns out 260kW, the new version is expected to produce around 304kW when matched to a six-speed auto, bringing it close to - but not quite matching - the 310kW the same engine delivers with the US-market Chevrolet SS.
