Nurburgring speed limits to be lifted in 2016 after safety upgrade

The management company in charge of the Nurburgring Nordschleife says that it will soon begin improving safety at the famous track and during 2016 it will remove the speed limits imposed on certain parts of the circuit.

Overnight, Capricorn Nurburgring GmbH announced that it will begin upgrading safety features at the track, including the installation of new guardrails and FIA safety fences. The company will also enact a new restricted area at Schwedenkreuz, as well as renew a 500 metre section of track at the Flugplatz, smoothing out five bumps caused by heavy use.

The German motor sport association and other stakeholders, including the automobile industry, approved the proposed measures at a recent roundtable dubbed "Safety on the Nordschleife".

Hans-Joachim Stuck, the motor sport association's president, said: "All parties want to preserve the Nordschleife and its uniqueness. However, we all know that we will have to improve safety. To this end, the Nurburgring as track operator has worked hard to devise a set of effective measures in great detail which met with broad approval at this round table."

Work will begin in November, with seven of the 16 proposed safety upgrades due to completed by early 2016. The other measures, it seems, will be implemented over "the next few years".

During a VLN endurance race in March 2015, an onlooker was killed after a car flipped and flew into the spectator area. In response, Capricorn imposed a 200km/h speed limit on the Tiergarten, Flugplatz, Schwedenkreuz and Antoniusbuche, while a 250km/h limit was placed on the Doettinger Hoehe straight.

If all goes to plan, these speed limits will be lifted some time in 2016.
