2016 Jaguar XF InControl Touch explained

InControl is Jaguar’s brand new connected car system, which is currently available on the F-type and XE, and will be standard on the all-new XF from the end of this year

The system covers three main areas; telematics and remote services; apps and smartphone connectivity, and the infotainment system, itself.

The entry-level InControl Touch system features an eight-inch responsive touchscreen, that allows fast access to all those apps supplied within the car. It also allows remote services to the vehicle via your smartphone.

Your smartphone will allow you to check from anywhere in the world, the car’s status, start the engine or even pre-heat or cool the cabin. There’s also InControl Secure, which keep your vehicle protected by alerting the owner, and working with the control centre to enable a faster recovery.

There’s also InControl Wi-Fi; which uses an antenna mounted on top if the roof. The antenna body on the roof gives better reception, 20 to 30 per cent more than a smartphone would inside the cabin, and you can connect up to eight devices simultaneously.

Jaguar has also built a range of applications (apps) that you can use on the InControl platform so that customers can personalise their experience for entertainment and connectivity.

The latest developments include ‘rdio’ – a music streaming application with a catalogue of over 35 million songs in 85 countries. There’s also Glympse – a real-time app that shares your location with the people you trust, and audio books using a library of over 60,000 titles you can download and stream for listening in the vehicle.
Social media app Just right, has also been included within the system. It’s a safe way to use your favourite app on the move. It’s tailored for in-car use and uses voice activation, using simple command and control. It allows users to search their Twitter, Spotify for their favourite songs, and also messaging inside the car.

Taking centre stage, though, is the top-shelf InControl Touch Pro system, available to customers at the end of this year.

This is a brand new system, using a brand new interface and 10.2-inch touchscreen. It features a quad-core processor with Intel graphics, and runs on the next-generation Ethernet network technology.

The home screen can be customised, so you can add widgets, your favourite contacts, and add their shortcuts to the features that you like, very easily.

It also allows you to change your wallpaper and fully supports gesture control with pinch and zoom, making the process faster and more intuitive.

With InControl Touch Pro, smartphone connectivity is designed to be seamless. You can take your phone, select the route, which is automatically synchronised from your smartphone to your vehicle by use of the Touch Pro Route Planner for easy navigation.

Any just before you get to your vehicle, there is also the remote engine start capability that will start your engine, as well as adjust the climate control to your own pre-set likes.

Once inside the vehicle, and on the move, InControl Touch Pro is said to take navigation route plotting to a whole new level. The system gives you a true door-to-door guidance. It can advice others if you’re running late. Simply touch the contact button, and it will automatically share you estimated time of arrival. The system will also advise the driver of their routes, by learning their regular routes and understanding the traffic conditions using the cloud connectivity.

It also knows exactly where the car is using Dead-reckoning technology, perfect for big cities and areas where there are multiple tall buildings where GPS signals are often blocked.

Finally, when the driver reaches the destination, there’s also Approach mode, which where available will build a panoramic street view 200 metres before arriving at that specific destination.

The system also has a car parking app, which will find the nearest parking station, and InControl Touch Pro will also interact back to your smartphone with the Companion application, so the map appears on the smartphone whereby you can complete the journey to your destination on foot.

Integration with the 12.3-inch TFT screen in front of the driver also allows the map to be shown in the entire screen for easy directions.
