2015 Ford Mustang to debut new type of passenger knee bag

When the Ford Mustang is launched locally later this year it will be the first vehicle available with a passenger knee bag that's integrated into the glove box lid.

This compares to current designs that are built into the instrument panel. Ford says that the new knee bag will give the front seat passenger more leg room.

The airbag itself is an injection moulded plastic bladder, rather than a nylon or polyester bag, that's sandwiched between the inner and outer surfaces of the glove box lid. When the car senses a collision, a gas inflator hidden inside the glove box lid is able to expand the moulded plastic sac to full capacity in 20 milliseconds.

According to Ford, this design has 23 patents against its name, is up to 65 percent lighter and takes up 75 percent less space than existing passenger knee bag designs. It's also said to provide "comparable protection".

Sean West, Ford's restraints manager, says: "Our glove box airbag opens up a whole new world of possibilities for injection-moulded plastic airbags. The glove box airbag could be just the beginning."

The new Ford Mustang will go on sale in Australia from late 2015 with the new passenger knee bag standard in both the 2.3-litre and 5.0-litre V8 models.

Pricing for the new Mustang starts at $44,990 for the coupe and $53,990 for the convertible.
