Audi Q7 gains new 3.0 TDI ultra engine

The 2016 Audi Q7 luxury SUV range has gained a new ultra-frugal variant, the ultra 3.0 TDI quattro.

The new engine uses the same base six-cylinder turbo diesel engine as is seen in the new-generation Q7 in Australia, although the ultra version has less power, less torque and uses considerably less fuel. Audi claims the changes between the higher-output engine and the new ultra engine include adjustments to the water pump, oil cooler and the combustion process.

The Q7 ultra 3.0 TDI quattro produces 160kW of power (compared with 200kW in the regular 3.0 TDI) and 500Nm of torque (compared with 600Nm in the other model), and fuel use is claimed at just 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres, where the regular model uses 6.2L/100km.

Unlike entry-level versions of the soon-to-be-replaced Mercedes-Benz ML-Class and current BMW X5, the Q7 range remains solely available with quattro all-wheel drive. Audi claims the efficiency-focused model can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in just 7.1 seconds.

The engine has not been confirmed for Australia, but it would make sense for an entry-level version to slot in below the soon-to-launch 3.0 TDI, which costs $103,900 plus on-road costs.

It may not be called an ultra if it launches in Australia, either. We expect to learn more about the brand's future expansion plans in the coming weeks and months.

Stay tuned.
