BMW confirms new concept pair for Pebble Beach show

BMW is queuing up a pair of new concepts for the Monterey Car Week event in the US next month, ahead of this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The carmaker is keeping quiet on just what we’ll see on its stand, although a telling teaser sketch released today hints at something along the lines of a properly track-inspired M-badged monster.

The sketch reveals a Formula 1-like steering design with large gear-shift paddles and a set of mounted race-specific controls.

The involvement of BMW’s M division is made most obvious by the appearance of blue and red stitching - an iconic combo for the famous tuning arm.

Does this sketch hint at a new BMW racer? Reports in recent months have claimed the carmaker is quietly planning a return to the top end of Le Mans racing, so an unveiling next month for a sleek track machine could be on the cards.

It is also possible that we’ll instead see a hardcore new concept bound for the virtual Vision Gran Turismo racing simulator, where BMW has already revealed a 2 Series-based racer.

As for the second of BMW’s two planned Pebble Beach unveilings, your guess is as good as ours.

Last year, the company showed off the 30th Anniversary Edition M5, along with the large Vision Future Luxury concept that immediately had punters pondering plans for a new 9 Series flagship.

That model has yet to appear in production form, but with the all-new 2016 7 Series only recently revealed, that’s hardly a surprise.

More recently, BMW showcased the 3.0 CSL Hommage, quite literally an homage to the original 3.0 CSL racer. Unsurprisingly, the company has yet to confirm any production plans for that bruiser.

Stay tuned for more on BMW’s Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach plans.
