2016 Toyota LandCruiser revealed further in new spy photos

Toyota’s refreshed 2016 LandCruiser 200 Series has surfaced once more this week, appearing in a handful of photos snapped by a well-placed Instagram user.

These new shots, posted online by Instagram user hamad1two3, offer the first ‘real world’ look at the big off-roading SUV’s updated styling.

As earlier leaked brochure images and marketing shots have revealed, the LandCruiser will soon debut a new-look grille and headlight arrangement, styled in at least three different forms depending on the model grade.

In its top-spec form - likely Sahara and VX models in the Australian range - the grille of the big 200 Series features a two-part design, with the lower half extending into the headlight housing at each end.

The changes continue at the rear, where the LandCruiser gets reshaped and LED-lit tail lamps, a longer satin-finished hand grab and a larger Toyota badge.

The LandCruiser is not the only big Toyota SUV that will bring a major update in the new model year, with its twin the Lexus LX readying an even bigger makeover.

Gaining its second major styling update since debuting in 2007, the LX will soon wear a significantly revised look at both ends, including a dramatically revised D-pillar shape.

That theme of change continues into the cabin, where there’s an all-new dash design with a broad top-mounted display, a new three-spoke steering wheel and a new centre console.

Launch timing for the refreshed LandCruiser and LX is still to be confirmed, but we could see both models debut at the Tokyo motor show in October.

A launch window for an Australian debut is likewise unclear, although an October unveiling would suggest a late 2015 or early 2016 launch.

When they arrive, the big Toyota and Lexus SUVs will once again square off against Nissan’s Patrol - which recently benefited from a huge $23,400 price cut - and the incoming Infiniti QX80.

Neither is likely to present a significant challenge to Toyota’s dominance, however. The LandCruiser 200 alone notched up 888 sales in June, while Infiniti celebrated a range-wide record of 50 sales.
